Meg's Swiss Adventure
Read about our latest team travel diary as we follow Meg's recent trip to Switzerland and Sass-fee.
Meg from our Paragon Travel Lounge Store, visited the Saas-Fee, an alpine mountain village in the district of Visp. It sits 1,800 meters above sea level and is known as the Pearl of the Alps. Known for its stunning scenery, high altitude skiing, hiking trails, outdoor adventure activities Saas-Fee really does have something for everyone. The town is very well connected by its local bus station, which has direct routes to neighbouring towns and train stations. By purchasing a ‘Swiss Travel Pass’ you can travel on any Train, bus and Cable car with just one ticket.
The town of Saas-Fee, has a deep routed connection with George Michael, as it is the place that he filmed the music video of the Christmas number one song ‘Last Christmas.’
I stayed at the 5-star Walliserhof Grand Hotel and Spa. Perfectly located in the heart of Saas-Fee, close to the bus links, shops and cable car lifts and down the mountains. Perfectly located in the heart of Saas-Fee, close to the bus links, shops and cable car lifts and down the mountains. This hotel was the place in which George Michael stayed, they have a whole room dedicated to him with views that simply take your breath away.
The food at the hotel was delicious and catered well to my nut allergy. So, anyone with allergenic needs, would be well catered for. They served local cuisine as well as having other restaurants within the hotel including a special fondue room. The food I had throughout the entire trip was fantastic; my favourite was the perfectly cooked steak and Swiss grown Apricot cake.
Throughout the entire trip, I took part in various guide lead activities. Doing various hikes, chair lifts, monster trollies, scooters, Marmot feeding, glacier hikes and so much more. Various levels of hikes are available from beginner to advanced are available. I took part in 2 guide led hikes during my stay.
The first was a short bus journey away to a place called Saas-Almagell. The guide took us on an easy route up through the mountain trail, over a waterfall and back down again. Once down she led us to a chair lift back up through the mountain. Once at the top, we were each given a scooter and helmet and we rode it back down the mountain on a flat road. This was an amazing experience, our whole group with people up to 50+ age took part.
The second hike was also a short bus journey to Saas-Grund. This is a definite MUST DO, if ever visiting. We used our travel pass to use the cable car up to the top of the mountain of Hohsaas which was 3,142 meters above sea level. This was my favourite as we could see the amazing view of the glacier up close. It was a bit more advanced than the previous but was still do able for people with beginner abilities. The 360 degrees post card worthy views were amazing this was a pinch me moment.
At Hohsaas, you can also take part in a guide led glacier hike, equipped with harness,’ sticks and ice cleats. This is a great way to get up close and personal to the glacier and have a once in a lifetime adventure. As well as all of this at Hohsaas in Saas-Grund, there are plenty of other things to do such as outdoor Yoga overlooking the alps; mountain biking; Igloo bar and restaurant; and monster trollies. I took part in the monster trollies, which are like a scooter with big wheels. They are easy to use and so much fun! It took us around 1 hour to scoot down the mountain, taking winding roads and stopping for scenery photographs on the way down.
As well as all of this you can spend a leisurely day around Saas-Fee, walking through the village, visiting the shops and seeing the house that was featured in the Last Christmas music video by WHAM. You can also take the cable car located in Saas-Fee to visit the Marmots. These are small animals that live in the mountains, they are very tame and will eat out of your hands, so be sure to take some carrots up with you.

On our final day, we took the train to Mörel as a final stop before returning to Zürich airport. This was an excellent stop and was a great addition to our trip. It would be a fantastic stopover or holiday destination for anyone who loves golf. As it has the second highest golf course in the world! The place has amazing views over the Swiss and Italian alps, a turning restaurant, glacier views and a spot for Paragliding.
What was your favourite moment of the trip?
My favourite moment was the monster scooter down the mountain in Hohsaas. It was so much fun and an experience I will never forget.
If you love anything outdoors, hiking, outdoor adventure, easy travel and breathtaking views this is the place to come. It would be great for families wanting an adventure or even solo holidays. Switzerland is a great and easy place to visit multiple places in one trip as it is so easily connected by public transport.
What would you've found useful to know before the trip?
It is useful to know about the travel passes and to buy them online before your trip. This would remove any added stress to a journey as the passes cover all areas of transport from the airport.
Summer in Switzerland gives you better weather reaching up to 30 degrees, meaning you can take part in more hikes, and activities without worrying about the weather or layers. Winter in Switzerland brings you skiing, and a whole new experience of Switzerland. Saas-Fee is for experienced skiers, but the surrounding areas offer a variety of slopes for all abilities.
In my opinion the Walliserhof Grand hotel and spa, is a great place to stay offering luxury at a slightly cheaper cost of the other hotels nearby at the same level of luxury. I also visited the Capra hotel. It was a beautiful hotel also in a great location, however the Walliserhof was much better, with better rooms and amenities.
Why should someone consider a visit to Switzerland? ο»Ώ
I believe that Switzerland is an amazing location for a family who love adventure. It took me by surprise how much i enjoyed it, as i am not usually adventurous. It pushed me out of my comfort zone and i made memories that will last a lifetime.
This would be a great location for a tailor-made trip, adding in stays across the region of Visp and connecting by train.
